Dr. Caroline Fu, DO

I'm Dr. Caroline Fu, and I practice psychiatry the way I believe it should be practiced: with adequate time for each patient, direct access to your physician, and the flexibility to see you when you need to be seen.

My concierge practice in Cambridge serves professionals and families throughout Greater Boston who require this level of care.

I combine board certification in both general psychiatry and child psychiatry with a practice model designed around what professionals actually need: unhurried evaluations, direct access to their physician, and coordination across every aspect of your life.

The Concierge Difference at Caroline Fu Psychiatry

“How a doctor’s office used to be.”

Extended Diagnostic Evaluations

Traditional psychiatric practices see many patients in brief appointments, leaving little time for the kind of thorough evaluation and thoughtful treatment that complex cases require. My practice operates differently.

Direct Access, Not Gatekeepers

Therapy sessions of 60-90 minutes allow us to understand your situation fully, not just manage symptoms. Direct access means you can reach me when questions arise, not leave messages and wait for callbacks. Same-day appointments accommodate both clinical urgency and busy professional schedules. A small patient panel ensures you receive the attention your care requires.A physician sees the whole picture.

We Understand Complexity

As a psychiatrist — not a therapist or nurse practitioner — Dr. Fu can diagnose complex presentations, prescribe and monitor medications when indicated, and coordinate care with PCPs, neurologists, and other specialists. Many childhood conditions mimic each other: ADHD can look like anxiety, anxiety can look like depression, and all of them can affect sleep, work performance, and family harmony. A physician trained in the full spectrum of psychiatry can distinguish between them.

Seemless care coordination

Mental health doesn't exist in isolation. Dr. Fu collaborates with therapists, counselors, HR, and your PCP to ensure everyone is aligned. When patients need resources beyond psychiatry — whether educational advocates, family therapists, or neuropsychological testing — we connect them with trusted specialists in the Boston area.

Complete Privacy & Discretion

For patients who value discretion, our small patient panel means you won't run into colleagues in the waiting room. We understand the concerns high-profile families have about confidentiality and treat privacy as seriously as clinical care.

Conditions We Treat in Boston

We treat a wide range of psychiatric and psychological disorders.

  • Anxiety is the most common mental health challenge, affecting roughly one in eight. It can manifest as excessive worry, work avoidance, physical complaints like stomachaches and headaches, perfectionism, or social withdrawal. We help you understand anxiety's patterns and develop strategies that restore confidence and engagement.

  • ADHD affects focus, impulse control, and executive function — the cognitive skills we need to plan, organize, and follow through. Proper diagnosis requires ruling out other conditions that can look similar, including anxiety, learning disabilities, and sleep disorders. When medication is appropriate, careful titration and monitoring maximize benefits while minimizing side effects.

  • Depression doesn’t necessarily look like sadness. Irritability, declining work performance, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleep or appetite, or even physical complaints can occur. Early intervention can prevent escalation and support healthy changes.

  • Many patients with underlying disorders — ADHD, anxiety, trauma, environmental stressors and others — may develop maladaptive behaviors. We develop targeted treatment plans considering every facet of your life.

  • For adults with autism spectrum disorder, psychiatric care can help patients understand a life of unexplained difficulties. We manage co-occurring conditions like anxiety, ADHD, and mood dysregulation, and collaborate with patients to offer support in the ways they require it.

  • OCD can present as repetitive behaviors, excessive checking, intrusive thoughts, or rituals that interfere with daily life. Evidence-based treatment, often combining therapy with medication when needed, can significantly reduce symptoms.

  • Sleep problems affect mood, attention, behavior, and academic performance. We evaluate for conditions like insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, and the sleep disruption that often accompanies anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

  • Those who have experienced trauma may struggle with anxiety, behavioral changes, difficulty concentrating, or emotional reactivity. We provide careful assessment and coordinate with trauma-specialized therapists to support healing.

  • When your work performance is struggling due to mental health concerns, it’s time to seek out a specialist. Whether your symptoms are due to anxiety, depression, social difficulties, or an undiagnosed learning difference, your work and social life can suffer. We work with patients to identify barriers and create paths forward.

My Approach to Whole-Person Psychiatry

Every client is unique, and effective psychiatric care starts with understanding the individual. Our approach emphasizes personalized medication management, therapy & coaching.

Every case begins with thorough evaluation.

I review all available records, conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessment, and often coordinate with other medical providers to ensure we understand the full picture. This evaluation may span multiple sessions.

We Build a Foundation of Mutual Understanding

From this foundation, we develop a treatment approach tailored to your specific situation. This may involve careful medication trials, addressing one variable at a time to understand what helps. It may involve coordination with specialists — therapists expert in specific conditions, neurologists, endocrinologists, or others whose expertise is relevant to your case.

I’m Your Partner, Not Just a Provider

Throughout treatment, I remain directly accessible. Complex cases often involve unpredictable developments; medication adjustments that cause unexpected effects, situational stressors that exacerbate symptoms, questions that arise between appointments. Having direct access to your psychiatrist allows these issues to be addressed promptly rather than escalating.

I consider developmental history, family dynamics, academic performance, social relationships, and previous treatments. I review prior evaluations and coordinate with other providers to build a complete picture.

Frequently Asked Questions about Psychiatry

Working with a physician offers unique advantages, including the ability to diagnose and treat underlying conditions.

  • Yes. Unlike some medical specialists, you typically don't need a referral to see a psychiatrist. You can contact my practice directly to schedule an initial consultation.

  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD or DO) who can prescribe medication, diagnose medical conditions, and provide therapy. Psychologists hold doctoral degrees in psychology and provide therapy but cannot prescribe medication. Many patients benefit from working with both—I often coordinate with psychologists and therapists to provide comprehensive care.

  • Traditional psychiatry appointments in Boston typically range from $200-$800 depending on session length and provider. Our medication management appointments are $350.

  • Boston is home to excellent psychiatrists affiliated with Mass General, McLean Hospital, and other leading institutions. The "best" psychiatrist for you depends on your specific needs, preferences, and what type of care model works for your life. I encourage you to explore options and find a psychiatrist whose approach resonates with you.

  • The first visit is a comprehensive evaluation where we discuss your symptoms, medical history, family history, and life circumstances. In my practice, this initial evaluation is 90 minutes, allowing time to truly understand your situation rather than rushing through a checklist. By the end, we'll have a preliminary understanding of your concerns and begin discussing treatment options.

  • It depends on your situation. If you think medication might be helpful, or if you're unsure of your diagnosis, starting with a psychiatrist makes sense. Psychiatrists can evaluate whether medication is appropriate and can also provide therapy or coordinate with a therapist. For concerns that seem primarily suited to talk therapy, you might start with a therapist who can refer you to a psychiatrist if needed.

  • Psychiatrists treat a wide range of mental health conditions including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, eating disorders, and more. We also help with complex cases involving multiple diagnoses or treatment-resistant symptoms. My practice has particular expertise in anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, autism, OCD, and complex cases.
